R. T. Fields Bar Association welcomes FALL to the Inland Empire

HOTTER THAN JULY!

We had a busy summer in our first year of existence. As you know, we kicked off our bar association in JULY with our Inaugural Reception honoring Judge Fields and swearing in our officers on 7/10/10. President Charlene L. Usher & Pres-elect Willie W. Williams welcomed members and friends to the Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles retreat in Rancho Mirage in July.

July 23, 2010: President Usher, Pres-elect Williams & Secretary Eric V. Isaac attended a reception for Andre Birotte US Attorney for the Central District, hosted by Langston Bar Association & BWL LA. The Central District (2nd largest in the U.S.) represents over 18 million people and encompasses over 260 attorneys in 7 counties in southern California

July 31, 2010, President Usher also welcomed our Inland Empire friends as we joined BWLLA, many African-American judges and members of Langston Bar Association to see a production of THURGOOD featuring Laurence Fishburne at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, preceded by dinner at Palomino.

NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION CONVENTION – NEW ORLEANS, LA

In AUGUST, President Usher & Pres-elect Williams attended the National Bar Association (NBA) 85th Annual Conference: “Standing on Shoulders, Keeping the Promise” where Richard T. Fields Bar Association was certified to vote as an affiliate in the elections. Demetrius Shelton, Oakland City Attorney and former president of California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), was sworn in as the president of the NBA for 2010-2011. Darryl Parks of Florida was elected  Pres-elect along with CABL past president Rozenia Cummings, elected as Member at Large.

President Usher greeted Brandeis Law School Professor Anita Hill at the NBA Women Lawyer’s breakfast; and attended the President’s reception at Mardi Gras World as well as a reception at the Louisiana Supreme Court. Trailblazing Los Angeles attorneys, Nelson Atkins & Irwin Evans were installed in the NBA Hall of Fame.

Impact along with the NBA celebrated their 1st class of 40 Nation’s Best Advocates under 40, including four California attorneys, Jamon Hicks (LA), Jennifer Fisher (LA), Gilda Clift Breland (LA) and Venus Johnson (Oakland). Three of them took home additional honors in the following categories: Service (Venus), Leadership (Gilda) and Innovation (Jennifer) in a star-studded awards ceremony featuring Judge Glenda Hatchett.

California was well represented at the NBA convention by Charles Houston Bar Association (Bay area), Earl B Gilliam Bar Association (San Diego), Solano County Black Bar Association, John M Langston Bar Association (LA), Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles and our own R. T. Fields Bar Association. We invite you to make plans to join us at the following upcoming NBA conventions where you will meet preeminent attorneys and judges, get plenty of CLE and enjoy parties in the wonderful US cities: 2011: Baltimore, 2012: Las Vegas, 2013: Miami.
