New York - As of January 19, 2012, nationally acclaimed law professor Charles J. Ogletree, Jr. has joined the Manhattan based law firm of Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady LLP.  As one of the nation’s leading scholars and practitioners in the fields of criminal defense and civil rights law, Ogletree joined the firm as “of counsel” to handle a full range of matters at the trial and appellate levels in New York and around the country, and will be fully integrated with the firm’s civil rights, criminal defense, and commercial dockets.

Professor Ogletree, who was named one of the Most Influential Lawyers in America by the National Law Journal, will handle a full range of matters at the trial and appellate levelsin New York and around the country, and will be fully integrated with the firm’s civil rights, criminal defense, and commercial dockets. Professor Ogletree will continue to serve as the Jesse Climenko Professor of Law and Founding Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School, where he has been on the faculty since 1985. A widely admired teacher, lecturer and author, Professor Ogletree has served as an attorney in numerous landmark civil rights cases and controversies, such as the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot Survivors’ Suit, the representation of Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in connection with his arrest by Cambridge police, and the representation of Professor Anita Hill in connection with the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Justice Clarence Thomas.

The former Faculty Director of the Harvard Law School Clinical Program and Deputy Director of the District of Columbia Public Defender Service, Professor Ogletree is a distinguished trial lawyer with expertise in all areas of trial practice. He is also a frequent commentator on criminal justice and civil rights issues in the national media. Professor Ogletree holds a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, and a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree (both awarded with distinction) from Stanford University.
